What do you actually pay?
The spot price is one of several lines on an electricity bill. Per kWh, they are:
- Spot price (the power exchange)
- 130.6 öre/kWh (day average)The price shown above. It changes every quarter hour.
- Supplier markup
- variesDiffers by supplier, sometimes with a monthly fee. The comparison shows each supplier's markup and the glossary shows the range in our data.
- Energy tax
- 36.0 öre/kWh45.0 öre/kWh incl. VAT. In the reduced-rate municipalities in northern Sweden: 26.4 öre/kWh excl. VAT.
- VAT
- 25 %Added on top of everything above, including the tax.
- Grid fee
- variesPaid to the grid company, not to the supplier. It varies by grid area and is not part of the prices here.
Worked example for 1 kWh at the day-average price (SE3, 20 Oct)
Spot price 130.60 + energy tax 36.00 = 166.60 öre excl. VAT. With 25 % VAT that is 208.2 öre/kWh. The supplier's markup and the grid fee come on top of that.
Why do SE1–SE4 differ?
Sweden is split into four price areas. The north (SE1 and SE2) has a surplus of hydro and wind power, while most consumption is in the south. The transmission grid can only move so much power southwards, and when it hits that limit each area gets its own price.
Negative prices
When it is windy and demand is low the spot price can drop below zero. On a quarter-hourly or hourly contract that lowers your cost for that quarter — but the supplier's markup, energy tax and the grid fee still apply, so your actual bill rarely goes negative. Negative hours are shown in blue.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the electricity price right now?
- Under “Now” at the top of the page is the spot price right now in the price area you chose, in öre/kWh. It is the exchange price excluding VAT, energy tax, the supplier's markup and the grid fee; the incl. VAT button shows it with VAT. The spot price is set per quarter hour, so the figure changes every 15 minutes in the 15 min view and every hour in the hourly view, where it is the hour's average. All of a day's prices are settled the day before, and tomorrow's are published around 13:00.
- What is the electricity spot price?
- The spot price is what electricity trades at on the Nord Pool power exchange. It is settled the day before, in an auction between producers and suppliers, separately for every quarter hour and every price area. It is the bare electricity price: the supplier's markup, energy tax, VAT and the grid fee are not included.
- What is the difference between the spot price and the Nord Pool exchange price?
- They are the same price: the spot price is the one set in day-ahead trading on the Nordic power exchange Nord Pool, for every price area and quarter hour, and those are the prices this page shows. What differs is what you pay. On a quarter-hourly contract you pay the spot price for each quarter hour plus the supplier's markup and VAT, while a variable monthly price is, according to the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate, the month's average price, weighted by when the supplier's customers on that contract use electricity. Energy tax and the grid fee come on top in both cases.
- Why is the electricity price different in SE1, SE2, SE3 and SE4?
- Sweden has been split into four price areas since 2011, from SE1 in the north to SE4 in the south. Northern Sweden produces more electricity than is used there, while most consumption is in southern Sweden, and the transmission grid has bottlenecks that limit how much power can be moved south. The borders between the areas run along those bottlenecks. When the market asks for more electricity than can be transferred, the areas get different prices, according to Svenska kraftnät.
- When do tomorrow's prices arrive?
- The day-ahead auction clears around midday and the result is normally published around 13:00. Until then only today's prices exist. This page picks tomorrow's prices up automatically as soon as they are out.
- Are the prices with or without VAT?
- By default the spot prices are shown excluding VAT, the same way the exchange quotes them. The excl. VAT / incl. VAT buttons switch to prices with 25 percent VAT added. Your choice is remembered in your browser.
- What do I pay on top of the spot price?
- The supplier's markup, on some contracts a fixed monthly fee, energy tax and VAT. The energy tax is 36.0 öre/kWh excl. VAT in 2026 (45.0 öre incl. VAT), and 9.6 öre lower in certain parts of northern Sweden. VAT, 25 percent, is added to everything, the energy tax included. On top of that comes the grid fee to your grid operator, which depends on the grid area and is not part of any price on this page.
