Quarter-hourly price (kvartspris)

On a quarter-hourly contract (kvartspris) your electricity price follows the exchange's spot price quarter by quarter. Here is what that means, and the quarter-hourly contracts of 100 suppliers by price area.

SEK, incl. 25 % VATPrices updated 19 Oct 2026, 09:11

What does kvartspris mean?

Since 1 October 2025 the day-ahead price on the Nord Pool exchange is set per quarter of an hour – 15 minutes – instead of per hour. A normal day therefore has 96 spot prices per price area, all set the day before.

The Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate (Ei) describes the contract like this: on a quarter-hourly contract you pay what the electricity actually costs on the exchange, plus the supplier's markup and VAT, and the price changes every 15 minutes. Some contracts also have a fixed monthly fee. Energy tax and the grid fee come on top, as with every contract.

According to Ei, if you have a quarter-hourly contract you should be able to see your quarter-hourly meter readings with your grid operator.

“Discount, new customers only”, “incl. discount”: the comparison price includes a temporary discount. Elpriskollen lists such contracts as having a “temporarily lower price” and, according to Ei, spreads the discount over one year for open-ended contracts and over the whole term for fixed ones – the price will rise during the contract. “New customers only”: the discount applies only when signing the contract as a new customer.

≈ = monthly fee calculated from Elpriskollen's comparison prices at 2,000 and 5,000 kWh.

The markup is the supplier's addition on top of the spot price, shown here in öre/kWh excl. VAT. “Not stated” means we do not have the markup as a separate figure – not that there is none.

The comparison price is öre/kWh including VAT and the fixed fee, as the supplier reported it to Elpriskollen or shows it on its own site. For a quarter-hourly contract it is an estimate: what you actually pay depends on the spot price in the quarters you use electricity. The grid fee and energy tax are not included.

⁂ = the comparison price is computed by us from the supplier's own energy price and fixed fee, not taken ready-made.

On the comparison page, quarter-hourly and hourly contracts share one tab, next to fixed, variable and mixed contracts, and prices can be shown at your own consumption.

Questions about quarter-hourly prices

What does a quarter-hourly electricity price (kvartspris) mean?

That the electricity price is set per quarter hour, i.e. per 15 minutes, rather than per hour or per month. On a quarter-hourly contract you pay the exchange's spot price for each quarter hour plus the supplier's markup and VAT, and on some contracts a fixed monthly fee. So the price changes every 15 minutes; energy tax and the grid fee come on top.

Why quarters rather than hours?

Since 1 October 2025 Nord Pool sets the day-ahead price per 15 minutes instead of per hour, so a normal day has 96 prices per price area.

How does a quarter-hourly price differ from an hourly price?

The difference is how often the price changes: on kvartspris it follows the spot price quarter by quarter, on timpris hour by hour. Elpriskollen lists them as two contract types. In our data 100 suppliers sell quarter-hourly contracts and 8 sell hourly ones.

Which contracts have a quarter-hourly price?

In our data 100 suppliers sell quarter-hourly contracts, 260 contracts across the four price areas in all (a contract that applies nationwide is counted in every area). The list “All quarter-hourly contracts” on this page shows them for your price area, sorted by comparison price. According to the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate, suppliers with more than 200,000 customers have had to offer a quarter-hourly contract since 1 October 2025.

Do I need a new electricity meter for a quarter-hourly price?

According to the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate, every electricity customer in Sweden has had to have a smart meter that can measure consumption every quarter hour since 1 January 2025. The meter and the metering are the grid operator's responsibility, not the supplier's, and you are entitled to have your consumption measured per quarter hour at no extra cost. On a quarter-hourly contract you should be able to see your quarter-hourly readings with the grid operator, which is also who to ask if you are unsure about your meter.

What do I need for a quarter-hourly price?

A quarter-hourly contract with a supplier and a meter that measures per quarter hour (see the question above). An assigned contract – the one you have if you never chose one – may not have a quarter-hourly price, so a quarter-hourly contract is one you sign yourself.

Why does the table show both the markup and the comparison price?

The markup is what the supplier adds on top of the spot price, and it does not move with the spot price. The comparison price folds markup, fixed fee and VAT into one number, but for a quarter-hourly contract it rests on an estimate of the spot price. That is why both are shown.
